Wednesday Horizon News

Dear Parents,
My name is Holli Pacitto and I have been in the classroom with your child on Wednesdays this school year. Starting in January, I will be with Mrs. Powers' and your child every day! Today was overall a great day. This morning started out a little rough. During morning meeting, the students had some trouble staying focused and engaged. Have a discussion with your child this evening about what happened in morning meeting today. We had a flip-flop schedule this morning and started the day with writer's workshop. During writer's workshop, the students worked in pairs to create posters advertising our bake sale. Jada and Brian were involved in creating a commercial for the bake sale instead of a poster. Look for the commercial on the blog and webpage in the upcoming days. In celebration of Alexis' birthday, the students enjoyed hot cocoa with their snack this morning. During fundations, the students wrote a letter to Santa. Please ask your child for this letter as they brought it home with them tonight, if not it will be in their Friday folder. This afternoon your children worked cooperatively to earn an opportunity for success during reader's workshop! At the end of the day, we went to the library. If your child did not come home with two new books, it means that they did not return their books today. Tomorrow your child will be seeing the Vermont Symphony Orchestra perform at 1:30pm. Have a great night!

Sincerely,
Holli Pacitto

Tuesday Horizon News

Dear Parents,
We are really excited about an upcoming activity. We have decided to donate the proceeds from our bake sale to the WCAX Mitten Tree project. I have spoken to WCAX and we are in the process of organizing a field trip to the tv station to present the hats and mittens that we purchased with the proceeds. We are choosing 4 students to make this trip along with two teachers. More about this later.
Today we went to the tech lab and continued with our project. Thursday will be Miss Irish's last day. She has been here all year on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will have a little celebration for her on Thursday.
Have a great night,
Please make sure your child has a change of clothes and socks every day!
Donna
P.S Today is Pearl Harbor Day.

Friday Horizon News

Dear Parents,
Yesterday we started our unit on Economics. We had a discussion about what the difference was between a want and a need. We read a story about a boy named Josh who needed to make a decision as to what to do with his birthday money. Should he save it or should he spend it. Josh ends up buying a hamster. Ask your child to tell you the story and ask them if they think Josh made the right decision. We also watched a great movie about Economics. It focused on the consumer and the producer to human resources, natural resources and capital resources. We brainstormed many of our wants and needs. Today we cut out pictures from magazines of things we wanted and things we needed to survive. Ask your child to tell you about some of their wants and needs.
You will see a flyer in the folder about a bake sale we are planning. We voted today to have the proceeds go to the WCAX Mitten Tree project. Hats and mittens will be purchased with the money we raise and will go to this project. Send back the paperwork on Monday if you are interested in helping with this.
So we have a mystery in our class that we need to solve. All week we are noticing that someone has been writing the name "Jada" everywhere in the classroom. We have found it written on books, walls, mini basketballs and today a new one was found on the computer table. We had a discussion the other day about this and I asked that the person that was doing it stop and to also speak to me privately. I thought it had stopped and then we found the new one. Can you please have a discussion with your child about it. I'm not sure as to what else I can do. I asked each one of them privately as they were leaving today if they were the one and they all said no. I am telling the kids that they can't just tell me who they think did it. They have to have seen them write it or the person may have told them that they did it. I really just want this situation over with so we can end the drama that goes along with it. Let me know if you find out anything.
Thanks
Donna
